UPDATE:
So, apparently you can change your Facebook message settings so not everyone can contact you. It’s ridiculous that I had to find that out through a Google search rather than on Facebook itself, but that’s probably my own fault. Hahaha. Problem solved. I’m back. :)

So, this past weekend, I did the unthinkable.
I left Facebook.
*gasp*
Just kidding. It’s not that newsworthy. I did want to offer a bit of an explanation, though…
The whole privacy issue thing on Facebook has really been bothering me. I frequent several online news sites, and it always bugs me that their comments are linked through Facebook. Even though I’ve tried everything I can to restrict my privacy settings to not allow it, the sites still show me logged in to their Facebook widget (is that what it’s called? a widget?). So that’s been one of my gripes about the whole thing, but not enough of one to make me leave.
Then, over the past two weeks, I have received pornographic Facebook messages from at least four different women. I don’t know any of them, the actual message usually only says “hi” or “hello,” but the profile picture is always of a topless woman.
Ugh.
I always reported the message, and usually by the time I went to block the user they were already removed from Facebook, but it’s still irritating. So I deactivated my account. I’m hoping that by doing that I’ll leave whatever spam list these people are using that is targeting me and when I reactivate (whenever that is…maybe in the next couple of weeks or so) I won’t have to deal with the problem anymore.
That’s it. No great moral stand against social networking (in fact, you can still come find me on Twitter — @stefspruill).
Sorry for the boring newsflash.
If you want to read something a little more interesting (at least I hope it is!), I blogged the other day over here.
