Why I left Facebook… November 17, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stefanie @ 11:49 am

UPDATE:

So, apparently you can change your Facebook message settings so not everyone can contact you.  It’s ridiculous that I had to find that out through a Google search rather than on Facebook itself, but that’s probably my own fault.  Hahaha.  Problem solved.  I’m back. :)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So, this past weekend, I did the unthinkable.

I left Facebook.

*gasp*

Just kidding.  It’s not that newsworthy.  I did want to offer a bit of an explanation, though…

The whole privacy issue thing on Facebook has really been bothering me.  I frequent several online news sites, and it always bugs me that their comments are linked through Facebook.  Even though I’ve tried everything I can to restrict my privacy settings to not allow it, the sites still show me logged in to their Facebook widget (is that what it’s called? a widget?).  So that’s been one of my gripes about the whole thing, but not enough of one to make me leave.

Then, over the past two weeks, I have received pornographic Facebook messages from at least four different women.  I don’t know any of them, the actual message usually only says “hi” or “hello,” but the profile picture is always of a topless woman.

Ugh.

I always reported the message, and usually by the time I went to block the user they were already removed from Facebook, but it’s still irritating.  So I deactivated my account.  I’m hoping that by doing that I’ll leave whatever spam list these people are using that is targeting me and when I reactivate (whenever that is…maybe in the next couple of weeks or so) I won’t have to deal with the problem anymore.

That’s it.  No great moral stand against social networking (in fact, you can still come find me on Twitter — @stefspruill).

Sorry for the boring newsflash.

If you want to read something a little more interesting (at least I hope it is!), I blogged the other day over here.

The older kids I nanny for (T, 13 yrs old & G, 11 yrs old) make me laugh, too.  I opened up the refrigerator at work the other day to find this:

Heh. :)

FIght

“FIGHT”

A book written and illustrated by M.

Dragon

This is a dragon.

[Please note the smoke coming out of his mouth.]

T-Rex

This is a “T-Rex.”

The T-Rex scratched the Dragon.

The Dragon burned the T-Rex with his fire.

The Dragon decided he wanted to be friends with the T-Rex.

[But he still has a little fire left in his mouth.]

The T-Rex wants to be friends with the Dragon, too.

[His hands are up to either shake the T-Rex's hands or give him a high five. I can't really remember. ;) ]

Now they’re friends! :)

Lazy blog syndrome… August 8, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stefanie @ 5:21 pm

I’ve been working on a new blog in my head about a bunch of cute things the kiddos at work have been doing.  I promise I’ll try to get to it soon, but I only seem to remember about it while I’m at work and something tells me my bosses wouldn’t be thrilled if I took time at work to blog. ;)

I suppose I could work on it now, but I’m enjoying a relaxing Sunday too much.  I blogged about my blissful day over here.  I wanted to remember today because it’s been so nice, so I thought I’d take a break from my lazy afternoon to type out a few thoughts.

I’m now going to go resume my relaxation… :)

Funny kid quotes… May 29, 2010

I was watching Shrek with M & A the other day, and the scene came on where Shrek pulls a “candle” out of his ear while he’s eating dinner alone.

M: [laughing] Look, he pulled an “ear wack” out and is pretending it’s a candle!

Me: Yeah, isn’t that silly?  But it’s actually called earwax.

M: But he only pulled out one “ear wack.”

But of course!  How silly of me to miss that.

A and I were riding in the car headed to the library and she was telling me about a recent family trip to Chapel Hill, NC (both of her parents are UNC alums):

A: And then we saw Scary Arms at Chapel Hill.

Me: Who is Scary Arms?

A: Daddy’s friend.

Me: Do you mean Mister Mark (the only UNC friend of her dad’s that I’ve met)?

A: No, his name is Scary Arms.

Me: A, I know that’s not his real name.  What is Scary Arms’s real name?

A: Scary Arms is his real name!

Me: [thinking of a better way to put this...] Okay, but when you’re talking to Scary Arms, what do you call him?

A: Oh.  Mister Jason.  But his real name is Scary Arms.

Me: Why is his name Scary Arms?

A: Because he haves (HA) lots of tattoos!

Oh, man.  This girl is too much sometimes.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A has always struggled with a sensitive stomach, and they think they’ve pinpointed the problem to lactose intolerance.  As much as the girl loves her dairy, this has definitely been a bit of an adjustment.  She has lactose free (or “special”) milk, which she loves, but when her mom tried to buy her some soy milk ice cream sandwiches, she took one bite and refused the rest.  Thankfully, she is more than willing to chew a Lactaid tablet if it means she gets her beloved ice cream (or cheese or yogurt — the girl loves her dairy products!).

I told her a couple of days ago after lunch that she could have an ice cream sandwich for dessert:

Me: What kind of ice cream sandwich do you want?  Do you want the ice cream cookie sandwich or do you want your special kind?

A: No, I want the kind that gives me diarrhea.

For the record, that’s the cookie kind with real milk (in case you were wondering).  I texted the story to her mom and got back the reply “oh Lord help us.” Hahahaha.
